080210 – Clouds, kitchen garden and soya beans
Yesterday at the sunset, we took shots of beautifully displayed clouds, shaped as a large stamp like an emblem. Today we went to see the flowers and pick up some soya beans planted out months ago.

The three cisterns were installed yesterday, being: 1000 liters, 500 liters and 320 liters. The 1000l is for the running water supplied by the state water company. The 500l to be used as a tank to collect rain water, and the smallest one for the grey water which will be filtered and used exclusively in the toilets. We are also considering connecting the 500l cistern to the smallest one, so that we can utilize part of the rain water in the house. Although rain water can be utilized for the general household tasks, it is not suitable for drinking due to the low quantity of dissolved minerals (being similar to distilled water). It is important to mention that this applies to our region, where pollution is not high. Where levels of pollution are high, the rain water quality is usually very poor.

080210 - Ecological bricks – conventional assembly (click to see the images)
Today Luis Henrique and his family visited the site to have a better understanding of the ecological bricks we are using. They told us about a house which was being built with similar bricks, but for some reason, the construction had been abandoned. Being naturally curious, we decided to check it out. Not to our surprise, hundreds of bricks laid down lost in the site.
Needless to say, we were interested in how the bricks had been laid. As we could not find specialized people in this area to build our house, we were suspicious the bricks had been laid as conventional ones. And that was exactly what we saw.
Observing the images, one can see with naked eyes, how the bricks are out of alignment, how sand and cement, and in some parts soil, had been used to lay them together. In order to get stability, an excess of iron bars were used to build the columns. The choice for the conventional process killed some of the most characteristic features of this type of construction: speed, alignment, leveling, final quality.
The more experienced the bricklayer might be, this new process of construction demands different approaches, techniques and points of view. It would be like expecting a typist, who has used typewriters all their lives, to be as efficient, using a computer.

080206 – Windows renewed (click to see more images)
Vitor opens up his windows to the world, transforming unwanted rundown second-hand goods into masterpieces. While working, he molds and modifies his own life: removing time scars, rotten pieces, rusty hinges… cleaning, polishing, fixing, painting, making decayed goods alive again. Time is renewed, life is transformed, and the pale grey color is replaced by bright new ones. The old structure is renewed while past becomes present. An entrance hall to the future.

Flores novas na horta. Alfaces crescendo a olhos vistos, rs.

New flowers in the kitchen garden. Lettuce grows quickly. After a few days of dry weather, the rain was torrential last night. Although there is no official information about rain precipitation in this area, it poured down with heavy rain all night long. And this time the rain came from the east coast, whereas it usually comes from the south-southeast coast.
Late afternoon we visited the construction site paying special attention to the wetland. The intervention the day before seems to have worked well as the wetland is not giving off any odor and the extra amount of soil seems to have absorbed the excess of rain. A closer approach and we notice a faint odor coming from the bed of stones, above the wetland. As the idea is to make small interventions so that we can follow the results step by step, we decided to cover the bed first with a plastic sheet and then with sieved soil. The plastic sheet is to avoid the soil to mix with the stones, while the soil will play a decisive role in the pre-filtering process of the water coming to the system. The images show the process evolution.

From the balcony in our house in Itajuba we have watched stunning sunsets. Against the clouds (here they are again!) a “gate” is shaped revealing a way in constant change while colors and shapes follow.

080202 – The house from a different angle (click to see more images)
Due to the heavy downpours we covered the roof with plastic bags in order to avoid too much water sitting in the bedrooms flagstone. While visiting the neighbors we took the chance to take pictures of our house, this time from a different angle, the southeast. We can see the bedrooms at the back and the office room at the front.

Novamente visito a wetland e percebo cheiro desagradável.

080202 – Wetland working 5 (click to see more images)
Once again we could smell an unpleasant odor coming from the wetland. There is water on the tank surface. Time to intervene. We decide to fill the tank with more sieved soil and remove some grass, filling up the open spaces. In some corners we do some holes and observe that the water coming to the top appears to be clean. We understand how important it is to keep the water under the surface to a better filtering and to avoid unpleasant smell. Thus we are faced with two possibilities: to fill the tank with more sieved soil or to do a drain. We decided for the soil to see how it works.

080201 – The hydraulic system
As the construction workers building our house do not implement the hydraulic system, I decided to take this challenge myself. We are going to use a new solar heating system developed by a company being incubated here in the city run by a young entrepreneur member of a non-governmental organization responsible for the development of a low cost solar heating system. His new version of the heating system is fully modified and aimed at the low and middle class.
In order to install this new heating system, we needed to have the plumbing system prepared; therefore it was crucial to assemble the cold and hot plumbing system at the same time. The specificities of the solo-cement bricks, the wall thickness, the bricks distance, the types of pipes and so on, demanded a completely different approach from the traditional construction process. This way, as I was designing the system, cutting the bricks, preparing the pipes connections, I was at the same time reflecting, learning and organizing my thoughts and ideas.
At the end of the day, the shower plumbing system turned itself into a sculpture. Or better yet, into two of them. A very rewarding, pleasant and careful work, as the last few days have dripped down with a lot of water (rain, floating wetland, plumbing system). As usual, I try to establish connections from the inside to the outside, between pipes, connections, water, feelings, emotions, evolution, construction. This way the learning is always multidimensional.

Hoje novamente o odor característico estava presente e novamente a água estava aflorando, formando pequenos lagos no sistema.

080131 – Kitchen garden and wetland 4 (click to see more images)
The kitchen garden is growing strong, as well as the tiny Agroforest System (AFS). Flowers and lettuce share the same bed as tomatoes, beans, papayas.
The banner advertising Gaia Terranova is ready (see image above). We plan to change its place though as it is hardly seen from the street.
The wetland has offered me substantial learning. The other day I felt bad smell coming from it, but hours later the smell had disappeared. I concluded that the odor is present when there is water on the surface of the tank.
Today, the wetland was giving off a distinctive odor and the water was on the surface of the tank creating small puddles. The plants seem to be in their natural habitat, as they grow quick and strong due to the availability of nutrients. I plan a few interventions to get rid of the smell, but first, I need a better understanding of the relation water level-odor.
